Long walk and short game drive

Start early and drive to Lake Manyara. Unpack at campsite. Game drive in Lake Manyara. Eating Lunch inside park. The park has a dense forest so you will get very close to Black monkeys, Blue monkeys and baboons. Also you can get very close to elephants, giraffes and hippos. If you are lucky you can see lions in the trees. The park has a very nice lake with plenty of birds. After game drive you will return to the campsite and have dinner. The campsite is close to the village «Mosquito River» so you can take a walk there.

Drive to Ngorongoro crater (2 hours). Game drive and picnic lunch down in the crater. If you are lucky you can see the Big 5 (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino) inside the crater. There is also a lake in the crater with thousands of flamingos. Usually you can also see many antelopes, zebras, gnus and hippos. When you have lunch watch out for the hungry black birds! They can come too close some times. In the afternoon drive to Nainokanoka. Walking to Olmoti Crater and see the waterfalls (1 hour). Walking back to Nainokanoka for dinner and overnight in tents.

Walk from Nainokanoka to Bulati. A masaai guide will follow on this trip. You only need to bring drinking water. The car will bring the equipment to the camp.This is an easy walk passing the Bulbul depression. Its open landscape with no trees, just grasses. On the walk you will pass many masaai bomas. Lunch will be served when you reach Bulati camp. After the meal you can go to a Masaai boma where you can get into the Masaai house and see how a family is living. The women and men will also perform their traditional dance.  Overnight in tent and dinner at Bulati special camp.

Walk from Bulati camp and up to Empakaai crater rim. This is a harder walk since it’s up, up, up. When you reach the top you will have a fantastic view down to the Empakaai crater. Lunch is taken on the way. After reaching the top you will walk around the crater to the campsite. When you walk the masaai guide will follow you and you only need to bring drinking water. The car will bring the equipment to the campsite. If you want you can descend the crater from the campsite. It’s highly recommended. The masaai guide must follow you down the crater since you can find buffaloes there. It’s steep down to the crater and 300 meter altitude difference. Dinner by the fire and overnight in tents at the crater rim. The campsite is at almost 3000 meter so it can be very cold in the night.
 

Walk from Empakaai special camp to Naiobi masaai village. On this walk you will walk on a path in dense forest. Lunch in Naiobi village. From Naiobi village there is no more road. This means that you get donkeys to carry the equipment for the rest of the walk. The masaai guide will follow you all the way together with your cook. At Naiobi village you can see Lake Natron, Oldoinyo Lengai (the holy mountain of the masaai), Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. After lunch you proceed downhill to Acacia special camp. This is easy walk since it’s slowly downhill. Dinner and overnight in tent at Acacia special camp.

Walk from Acacia camp down to Lake Natron. The walking is first through acacia forest and then you walk on mountain ridges before you descend down to Lake Natron. When you reach the bottom you will also be at the foot of Oldoinyo Lengai. Here you will leave your masaai guide and the donkeys. The car will wait for you and take you to a beautiful campsite close to a river. After a long walk with no fresh water its very nice to take a swim in the river. It’s also possible to walk up to where the river is coming out of the mountain. As this is in Great Rift Valley you will follow a canyon made by the river before you reach to the waterfall where the river comes out of the mountain. It’s a difficult walk since you will walk both in the water and climb on the side of the river. But it’s fantastic to reach the source! Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

If you want you can climb Oldoinyo Lengai in the night.
 

Drive to Lake Natron and watch the amazing bird life. In the afternoon you drive back to Arusha.

NOTE: When you are walking in masaai land you will meet many people who will be curios. If you ask polite you might take pictures of them. Some want money for doing it, and some they don’t want at all to be taken picture of. Please respect their culture and ask before taking pictures.
Many women and children will sell you jewelers. This is a golden chance to get real masaai things instead of buying it in a souvenir shop. And you will know that the money stays to those who have made it.
